Last Saturday, I went on an Adventure. My friend GG, her sister, and I went on a road trip to meet several of our online friends in person.
We met up at a mall, ate lunch at the food court (once we found it), wandered around for a while, and finally settled in the children’s section of Barnes & Noble and talked for ages. It was so much fun.
Having internet friends seems to be difficult to understand if you haven’t experienced it. Meeting them in person is, too. The closest thing I can think to compare it to is meeting a friend of a friend you’ve heard a lot about, but it’s much more personal than that.
For me, at least, online friends always have a feel in my head – kind of like the sound of a person’s voice in “real life”, but even more difficult to describe. When you meet them in person, you have to mesh that feel with the flesh and blood person standing in front of you who has a height and facial expressions and an actual voice. It’s not necessarily a hard adjustment, just intriguing.
Getting together with these people has been something we’ve all wanted to do for a long time. I’m so glad we finally made it happen, and I very much hope it will happen again.
