Happy Gondorian New Year!

Yesterday was the Gondorian New Year – the day in The Lord of the Rings when the One Ring was destroyed and Sauron’s evil reign was ended. So, since I have a lot to do and don’t have anything I’m terribly eager to write about at the moment, here is a sonnet I wrote about that day a few years ago.

The reign of Sauron comes now to an end!
We passed the test; our heads we did not bend.
The Ring is now destroyed in Orodruin*!
The cloud is gone; once more shine sun and moon.

The long-awaited king returns today.
He saved our land; with fealty we’ll repay.
Ilúvatar has blessed the world with peace.
We praise him greatly; we will never cease.

We praise the Halflings! Praise them with great praise!
A laita te**! In song their names we raise.
Though they are small they saved all Middle-earth;
No better way to demonstrate their worth.

Although with loss our homes we did defend,
The reign of Sauron comes now to an end!

*Elvish for Mount Doom
**Elvish for, “Bless them!”
